USWNT Defeats Vietnam in their Opening Match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup

The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) defeated Vietnam 3-0 in their opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on July 22, 2023. Sophia Smith scored two goals in the first half, and Lindsey Horan added a goal in the second half. The USWNT dominated possession and shots throughout the match, and Vietnam was unable to create any serious scoring chances.

The match was played at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, in front of a crowd of 41,107 fans. The USWNT improved to 7-2-0 all-time in opening matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and they have now started each of the last four tournaments with a win.

Sophia Smith was named the Visa Player of the Match. The 21-year-old forward scored her first two goals of the tournament, and she now has 11 goals in 20 appearances for the USWNT.

The USWNT will next play the Netherlands on July 26, 2023. The match will be played at Western Sydney Stadium in Parramatta, Australia.
